The word “thorough” is the one that I keep seeing when people describe Phil Emery and discuss the process for hiring the next Bears head coach. He has had round one of interviews, and it appears that Darrell Bevell and Marc Trestman are headed to round two, and there are probably a few others that we don’t know about.
It makes me happy, believe it or not, that Emery is taking his time and figuring out things. He has to think about things like the cap, the coaching style, and how those two interact. It isn’t easy.
We have a lot of old guys that we will have to jettison or modify their contracts. Url’s best days are behind him, while Briggs is also another year longer in the tooth.
The returns are very early, but I think promising that we didn’t take the first swinging d1ck we found and anoint him the coach. This year’s draft will be very interesting to see as well as I am sure that Emery’s hands were tied last year a bit.
This is Emery’s baby now. It is all on him. I hope I am right. I am cautiously optimistic.
Whoever this new guy is – if I am him the first thing I will do is put a swift boot up Cutler’s ass and then pat him gently on the head to let him know who the real boss is.
Obviously Lovie Smiff or Tice or Martz never did. To me, Cutler has shown he is a petulant little snot who was led to believe by past management he is some ordained superstar top ten NFL QB before actually proving he has the head to go with the arm. So get to work Jay, starting now.
If I am the new guy I am also telling Emery before I sign any contract he must assure me he will bring in a fresh new talented QB to seriously challenge Cutler for his job. This franchise never challenged Jay. Maybe that will buy him some instant humility, respect and maturity. Maybe then Jay can learn how to lead. He has one last chance to prove it.
Cautious optimism is always necessary to be a Bear fan. •Mini-Rant Over•
We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one Gerry. Cutler to me is a fantastically talented qb. He is our guy. We are sticking with him.
With those horrible offenses and even worse lines he was getting into the equivalent of ten thirty mile an hour car wrecks a game. I would be pissed off too.
Anyways, we are beating a dead horse here. Cutty is the qb, no matter who comes on board. So like him or lump him, you got more Cutty to come.
I am a big Cutty fan too but in any case something isn’t right because we aren’t getting the best out of him.
If we can draw up a good game plan that leverages our talent and (gasp) perhaps even has some innovation and Cutty still botches it, well I am open to changing my mind some time.
